This CBS children’s series coupled live action with puppet characters and featured The Riders in the Sky (who specialised in three-part harmony on authentic Western tunes and cowboy schtick straight out of 1950s television) as cowboys who enforce the law in Tumbleweed City.
The Riders – led by Ranger Doug on his horse, “Turbo” – are based at the Harmony Ranch (which allows them to sing), and stories follow their attempt to keep the peace. The other Riders are Too Slim and Woody Paul.
Princess (Dawanna Murrell) is an Indian girl; Sourdough (Patrick Bistow) is the ranch hand; Slocum (DJ Turner) is a bad guy who hates it when the good guys win; Sheriff Burp (a puppet voiced by Kevin Carlson) is the town’s lawman; Muley (Jim Dougham) and Axl (Stan Kirsch) are the other ranch hands; Annie Oakes (a puppet voiced by Lynne Stewart) is a sharpshooter; and Calamity (a puppet voiced by Julianne Duescher) is an accident-prone young girl.
The puppet hangout is the Wild West Puppet Saloon. Children in the viewing audience are called Saddle Pals.
