After crashing his bicycle in the Yorkshire valley of Troller’s Ghyll, 10-year-old Roger Becket (Nick Barber) is made King of the Rottentrolls and, with his young stepsister Kate (Holliday Grainger), attempted to teach them about things like sport and politics while learning about their world.
The Rottentrolls were all named after places in Yorkshire: Aysgarth was the oldest and wisest of the Rottentrolls and an accomplished artist, proficient at drawing landscapes and scenic portraits.
His older twin sister, Blacksyke, was the most rotten, scariest, and most mysterious Rottentroll.
The blundering Yockenthwaite – “the stupidest of the Rottentrolls” – was a slow reader and not very good with numbers but excellent at map reading.
Penyghent – generally considered “the cleverest of the Rottentrolls” – was a female Rottentroll with an impressive talent for football.
Kettlewell was a bad cook with muscles the size of potatoes. Her speciality dish was garlic pasties. Her daughter, Little Strid, was the youngest Rottentroll.
Askrigg was a sports-obsessed Rottentroll who tried his hand at every sport imaginable.
Other Rottentrolls included Trucklecrag (a failed wizard), Sigsworthy Crags (a failed inventor and former estate agent who was completely mad), and a pair of teenage Rottentrolls called the Nab Twins who played in a rock band called Cattle Grid.
Also living in the valley were Commander Harris, a sheep and ex-army mascot who was skilled in the ancient art of JimJamYaha, and a terrifying and menacing creature called the Barguest.
The episodes – a combination of live-action and puppetry – were narrated by Men Behaving Badly‘s Martin Clunes and filmed at Brimham Rocks near Harrogate, Yorkshire.
The first series attracted more than a million viewers and won the 1997 BAFTA for “Best Children’s Entertainment Show”. Later series were nominated for awards from both BAFTA and the Royal Television Society.
