Set in a forgotten town in the Rhondda valley in south Wales that had once been used for the testing of satellite dishes (hence the title), this surreal BBC comedy was based around the misadventures of the Price family: Idris (Islwyn Morris), his son Gwynne (Boyd Clack, who also co-wrote the series), and Gwynne’s wife Moira (Ri Richards).
The family had a lodger – a new-age American traveller called Randy (Michael Neill) who shared their house, a room and eventually a bed with the inimitable Price family.
Randy soon formed a relationship with local girl Mandy (Shelley Miranda Barrett).
Other regular characters included barman Dai (Rhodri Hugh) and Mandy’s friend Bridget (Einir Sion), who was replaced in the final series by the character of Donna (Kirsten Clark).
In the final episode, Randy moved into his own house with Mandy.
Satellite City originally started as a radio show on BBC Radio Wales in 1994 and evolved into a TV version in 1996.
