Galactus (voiced by James Blendick) is a cosmic being that sustains itself by consuming planets. It has no regard for other life forms.
When the planet Zenn-La is threatened by Galactus, a fearless man named Norrin Radd (voiced by Paul Essiembre) intervenes and offers to find planets for Galactus that do not contain life.
Galactus accepts the offer and endows Norrin with the “Power Cosmic” – but also removes all his memories of humanity so Norrin can find planets that contain life without being affected.
Now, as the Silver Surfer, Norrin scours the universe, seeking planets for Galactus to consume. He serves Galactus well until a confrontation with an evil being named Thanos (Gary Krawford) awakens his memories of his planet and humanity.
When Norrin sees that Galactus is about to consume the Earth, he uses his powers to stop his former master.
Angry that Norrin has defied him, Galactus places Norrin’s home planet, Zenn-La into an unknown region of deep space.
Although he is a hero for saving Earth and is no longer bound to Galactus, the Silver Surfer is hated by many races who want revenge for what he has done to their planets as a servant of Galactus.
Now, as an outcast, the Silver Surfer roams through endless space on his flying board, seeking his home planet and his lost love, Shalla-Bal (Camilla Scott), while at the same time protecting planets from the vicious Galactus.
The series ran from 7 February to 30 May 1998. A further 13 episodes were planned, but Marvel faced bankruptcy issues and couldn’t afford to produce the second season. As a result, the final episode ended on an unresolved cliffhanger.
