This short-lived sitcom from CBS introduced Deb DeAngelo (Debi Mazar) – a street-smart Italian American from Brooklyn who loses her job as a makeup technician when she refuses to pitch expensive cosmetics to a customer who’s getting a discount makeover. That makes 27 jobs in two years.
Having just found the perfect Manhattan apartment (which suddenly has a fabulous view of the Brooklyn Bridge because the building next door burned down), Deb is desperate and ends up working for an Upper East Side temporary employment agency run by neurotic Joan Silver (Joanna Gleason) and her hormonal son, David (Seth Green).
Joan gives Deb all the odd and difficult jobs that nobody else wants, hoping the jobs will discourage Deb and make her quit.
And so she finds herself working for a funeral director (applying makeup to a corpse), an erotic novelist (John O’Hurley) and a very demanding fashion designer (Alison LaPlaca).
Nancy Cassaro played Deb’s friend Anne Marie, and Saverio Guerra was her fast-talking landlord.
Despite a strong start – largely down to the terrific chemistry between Mazar and Gleason – the series was quickly branded a clone of The Nannyand promptly cancelled due to low ratings.
