Sean McGrail (Jason Beghe) was a calm, conservative detective with the Boston PD, and his wife, Annie (Moira Kelly) was a loud, feminist public defender, a situation that often caused these newlyweds to be at odds professionally.
At home they sparred verbally but never went to bed angry – they made up the old-fashioned way, with great sex.
Most of the rest of the cast was made up of Sean’s large Irish-American family. Annie’s closest confidante, her pregnant sister-in-law, Carolyn (Colleen Flynn), was married to Sean’s fireman brother, Patrick (Stephen Lee), whose drinking was creating problems.
His other brothers, Michael (Jason Wiles) and Tommy (Stephen Largay) were both street patrolmen, and his parents, retired Robert (John Cullum) and outspoken Fiona (Fionnula Flanagan) loved loud Annie. As Sean’s dad put it, “There’s nothing so wonderful as being with a woman you want to ravish one moment and strangle the next.”
The show aired on CBS on Wednesdays at 9 PM.
