10 x 60 minute episodes
20-something Cordelia Gray (Helen Baxendale) worked for private investigator Bernie Pryde, but his sudden suicide changed her life. His bequest to her of the seedy detective agency in London’s Brick Lane meant she was no longer an apprentice private eye, but the head of the firm.
She found herself thrown in at the deep end when she was hired by a prominent scientist to investigate the suspicious apparent suicide of his son, a Cambridge student. But Gray never looked back, renaming the company Gray’s Detective Agency she hid her inexperience behind a dogged determination and a deep sense of natural justice.
Matronly Office Manager Edith Sparshott (Annette Crosbie) provided a helping hand and not-always-welcome advice.
Gray was shown expecting in later episodes to coincide with star Helen Baxendale’s own pregnancy.
