12 x 30 minute episodes
This BBC comedy series featured a three-generation West Indian family living together in North London.
Bev Pinnock (Joanne Campbell for the first six episodes and then Nicola Blackman) was a freelance journalist whose work took her to every corner of the community. But her independent way of life was hampered by her teenage daughter, Aisha (Marlaine Gordon) who doted on her Jamaican-born Grandma (Mona Hammond) and Grandad (Allister Bain).
Meanwhile, Bev also had to deal with the cultural conflicts and inter-generational squabbles that frequently broke out in her home.
Grandma was a “mover and a shaker” who ruled both her own household and that of her daughter, just a few miles away. She didn’t take any nonsense from Grandad either, who – since retiring from the NHS – made it his business to try out every ailment in the medical dictionary.
