Where On Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?

This animated series was based on the educational computer game developed by Broderbund Software Inc, in which players had to locate super-thief Carmen Sandiego (resplendent in a red trenchcoat and fedora), her henchmen and stolen loot through geographical and historical clues.

The cartoon gave viewers the same task – tracking down Sandiego (voiced by Rita Moreno) as she stole the landmarks of the world each week.

Viewers were assisted by the investigative talents of 18-year-old teen sleuth Ivy (voiced by Jennifer Hale) and her 14-year-old brother Zack (Scott Menville), who operated for the Acme Detective Agency.

The Chief (voiced by Rodger Bumpass) was a disembodied head who dispatched “C-5” portals to transport Ivy and Zack to various locales, dispensing facts along the way about the region in quick and humorous yet enjoyable bits.

Viewers at home were asked a question before each commercial about an item mentioned in the previous segment, and episodes struck a solid balance between entertainment and education, subtly teaching kids facts about geography, history and other social studies.
