Sarah Marshall (Jane Curtin) is a divorcée with a nine-year-old daughter called Molly (Kyndra Joy Casper). David Stuart (Stephen Collins) is a divorced man with a 17-year-old daughter called Jodie (Robin Lange).
Sarah and David meet at Mr G’s Cooking School where they are both taking the course ‘Italian Cooking for Beginners’. They are attracted to each other (they have the same sense of humour and the same tastes) but neither is willing to make a serious commitment.
Stories relate their attempts to work out their differences and begin a serious relationship
Sarah, who loves anything Italian, is the assistant manager of the Bennington Hotel in Manhattan and lives in Apartment 9G at 654 West 54th Street. Her ex-husband, Joe, was a tennis pro who didn’t make it and is now a schoolteacher in Hawaii.
David is a freelance photographer who runs Stuart Photography from his apartment at 36 West 72nd Street. Jodie, attends Lincoln High School.
Sarah’s neighbour Andrea (Andy) Kristoli (Mary Beth Hurt), is a book editor whose husband, Charlie (not seen), lists her as “the Little Woman” on their income tax return.
Stan Rice (David Garrison) is Stuart’s agent and assistant.
