Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe (Jack Shepherd) was a calm and laconic – albeit old-fashioned, conventional and frequently morose – detective who worked in Cornwall.
His regular colleagues were bluff Falklands vet DI Doug Kersey (Jimmy Yuill) who relied on intuition and the cooler, more analytical DI Lucy Lane (Helen Masters).
The pace was slow and cosy but the scripts were superb, the acting was first-rate and the scenery was exquisite.
The series was eventually cancelled when Jack Shepherd refused to continue in the title role after HTV sacked his co-star and friend Jimmy Yuill for “insurance reasons” after he contracted bacterial meningitis during filming, and would not reinstate him even though he made a full recovery in a few weeks.
