After 18 years of marriage, Valerie Edwards (Deborah Kerr) is bored with her stolid advertising tycoon husband, Dan (Frank Sinatra) and constantly tells him she should have married his business associate, Ernie Brewer (Dean Martin in characteristic lady-killing mode).
While trying a second honeymoon in Puerto Villa, Mexico, Dan and Valerie have a row and get a hasty divorce courtesy of Miguel Santos (Cesar Romero), an endearing Mexican who specialises in “quickie” divorces, marriages, and funerals.
Before they can remarry, Dan is called away on business, and Valerie plans a lavish second wedding. By accident, she and Ernie are married by a Spanish-speaking official, and Valerie decides to hang on to her new husband until Dan realises what he is missing.
Dan, however, likes life as a bachelor, while Ernie loathes being a husband.
Adding to the fun in this light-hearted marital romp are Hermione Baddeley as Valerie’s Scottish bagpipe-playing, whiskey-swilling mother, Sinatra’s real-life daughter, Nancy, as his onscreen daughter, Tracy, who wants to leave home to move in with a go-go dancer (Davey Davison), and Tony Bill (who was a discovery of Sinatra’s) as Tracy’s boyfriend.
Neither Frank nor Dino sing a note, but Trini Lopez bangs out Sinner Man.
