Having previously visited Lewis Carroll in Jabberwocky (1977), Czech surrealist animator and director Jan Svankmajer made his feature bow with this distinctive adaptation, which combines live action, puppetry and stop-motion animation.
This menacing and grotesquely original modern-day version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland explores the darker side of the original tale and uses every live action technique in the special effects manual. It also contains dashes of startling eroticism.
The absurdist universe created by the Prague native plays around liberally with the source material, yet remains remarkably true to its spirit.
Flesh-and-blood actress Krystyna Kohoutova stars with a host of scary fish, skeleton birds and, most unusually, perambulating raw meat.
