This 1995 political romantic comedy-drama, directed by Rob Reiner and written by Aaron Sorkin (who would later borrow many elements for his highly successful series, The West Wing), stars Michael Douglas as a widowed US President who faces immense public and political pressure when he begins dating an environmental lobbyist.
Highly popular and charismatic Democratic president Andrew Shepherd is approaching the end of his first term. While balancing his executive duties and raising his teenage daughter (Shawna Waldron), he meets Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), a feisty political activist working for an environmental group.
The two fall in love, but their blossoming romance creates a massive media frenzy.
Shepherd’s ruthless and mean-spirited Republican opponent, Senator Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss), uses the relationship to launch personal character attacks and tank the President’s approval ratings just before the reelection campaign
Martin Sheen co-stars as A.J. MacInerney, the loyal White House Chief of Staff and Shepherd’s closest friend. Michael J. Fox is Lewis Rothschild, the idealistic, fast-talking Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.
The film was a major hit with critics and praised for its sharp dialogue, the chemistry between the leads, and its romantic charm. The movie was also a commercial success, grossing over $107 million worldwide against its $62 million budget.
