Cocky, up-and-coming young cockney snooker player Billy Kid (Quadrophenia star Phil Daniels) challenge nine times world snooker champion Maxwell Randall (Alun Armstrong) – popularly known as “the Green Baize Vampire” – to a 17-frame grudge match. Apart from the £50,000 purse, the loser can never play professional snooker again.
Bruce Payne plays Billy’s wide boy manager, T.O. (short for “The One”), Don Henderson is the psychopathic loan shark, The Wednesday Man, and Louise Gold is trouble-making journalist, Miss Sullivan.
Almost certainly the only vampire snooker musical in cinema history, this strange and entertaining movie – made by Central Television’s film-making subsidiary, Zenith – is a musical fable built around the real-life rivalry between British snooker players Ray Reardon and Jimmy White, on whom the Green Baize Vampire and Billy the Kid are loosely based.
