Cactus In The Snow (1971)

Harley Macintosh (Richard Thomas) is an innocent young soldier without a family who is due to leave America for the war in Vietnam.

On his last three-day pass, his friends try to persuade him to lose his virginity before it is too late.

He is picked up by a homosexual who, on the pretext of introducing him to some able and willing girls, gets Harley drunk.

Harley eventually realises the trap he is in and flees to a teenage discotheque (The Groove Box) where he naively approaches three girls with the question – “I’m leaving for the war on Monday. Do any of you sleep with boys?”

This causes some merriment and argument, but Cissy (Mary Layne), one of the girls, says that her house is empty as her parents are away, so she will oblige.

Unfortunately for Harley, the liquor he’s consumed overcomes his desire, and he promptly falls asleep.

The next day, Cissy makes a precise plan of how they will enjoy themselves, with sex being the last item on her seven-point list of entertainment.

As the day progresses, it transpires that it will also be Cissy’s first sexual encounter, and the weekend doesn’t turn out quite how either Cissy or Harley expected.

Richard Thomas and Mary Layne give understanding performances as the youngsters in this tender, humorous, frequently moving story.
