Dr Amanda Grace (Kate Vernon from Pretty in Pink) is a psychologist who enjoys considerable success dispensing sexual advice on a radio show to frustrated citizens of Los Angeles and who is not at all averse to the odd after-hours therapy session with any of the many men who take her fancy.
Life looks promising until Mick Larson (Lou Diamond Phillips, who also directed the film in his directorial debut) walks into her life.
Amanda is fatally drawn to the young man, and by the time she discovers that his appearance as a rich young thing about town is nothing but a sham, she is well and truly hooked on his sexual favours.
When his demands take a distinctly kinky turn, the good doctor is happy to go along. Even when Larson suggests a sex session between the doctor and an escort girl, Amanda is quite happy to be handcuffed to the bedposts.
Then, to her horror, she discovers the session has been filmed. Larson now begins to blackmail her, but it is not money he seeks.
Rather, the secrets of one of her clients – distinctly dangerous underworld boss Jasper Stone (Max Gail), who has a down on Larson.
When the gangster rumbles the plot, Amanda is trapped between two very dangerous men playing for the highest stakes – her life.
While the usual elements are at play (murder, betrayal, bedroom gymnastics), Lou Diamond Phillips clearly understands the genre and has fun with it, sometimes bordering on satire.
