It is July 1588 and, in the English Channel, the British Fleet has been battling for two days against the mighty Spanish Armada.
Badly damaged, with half their crews killed, the ships of Spain battle their way up the Channel. And in the thickest part of the fighting is one of the smallest Spanish ships – the licensed privateer Diablo, captained by the ruthless Captain Robeles (Christopher Lee).
Damaged and taking on water, the Diablo is forced to put in to shore on a lonely stretch of the English coast near a small and remote village.
Realising that news of the Armada’s defeat hasn’t yet reached this remote location, the pirates convince the villagers that Spain has won the war and they are now their rightful masters.
John Cairney makes a bland but admirable hero as Harry, the one-armed English blacksmith’s son willing to resist the pirates
This swashbuckling adventure was a successful diversion for Hammer Films from their usual horror fare.
