Of course the Devil would be a lawyer. Al Pacino’s incarnation of Beelzebub, John Milton, is the head of the most powerful law firm in the world, located in New York City.
He has a plan to bring down Heaven – use the law to keep the sinners on the streets, sinning. “Acquittal after acquittal after acquittal until the stench of it reaches so high and far into heaven, it choked the whole fucking lot of them.”
He’s also got a game plan to bring about the coming of the Antichrist by manipulating Keanu Reeves’ hotshot Florida litigator Kevin Lomax into impregnating his own half-sister, Christabella (Connie Nielsen).
Slick writing and direction, excellent cinematography, and an array of startling scenes, breathtaking effects and dazzling performances make this an imaginative thriller quite unlike any other. Pacino is quite simply superb.
