When newlyweds Jack (Ian Carmichael, displaying the dottiness that served him well throughout his career) and Peggy (Janette Scott) face eviction, they are tricked into buying a rundown houseboat, the Jasmine Gay, for £1,000.
After rebuilding the engine, they take car salesman Sid (Sid James) and his stripper girlfriend Sandra (the beautiful Liz Fraser) on a local trip down the Thames to Ramsgate, but somehow they end up in France.
They are given 12 hours to leave Calais Harbour, but with no fuel or supplies, they must resort to desperate actions to get back home.
Carmichael had lost his ability to carry a picture by this point, and lovely though Thora Hird’s daughter Janette Scott is, she’s no great shakes as an actress.
Still, there’s a veritable treasure trove of eccentrics here, including Naunton Wayne, Irene Handl, Miles Malleson and Noel Purcell – not to mention old smoothie himself, Dennis Price.
