After the Karate Kid and his mentor triumph at a prestigious tournament, their arch-enemy John Kreese (Martin Kove) seeks to avenge the defeat of his student.
At least the first film was a reasonable mix of sentiment, fisticuffs and pace, all of which was reduced in a dire sequel.
Here, in a feeble third outing, the “Kid” (fortunately, 27-year-old Ralph Macchio doesn’t look old enough to shave) has to defend his title and tackle the bad guys, initially without the help of his mentor Mr Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita).
The script takes leave of reality at an early stage, and it all becomes increasingly daft and humourless with each scene.
