Three years after delivering audiences a glimpse of Los Angeles AD2019 (in Blade Runner), director Ridley Scott turned his hand to complete fairy tale indulgence.
Visually inspired by the 1946 version of Beauty and the Beast (lavish sets and an emphasis on iconic monsters misunderstood), Tom Cruise stars as Jack, the handsome suitor battling the Lord of Darkness (the always superb Tim Curry) in order to save the world and rescue the beautiful princess Lili (Mia Sara).
The lush but mysterious forest harbours the traditional assortment of inhabitants: mischievous goblins, magical fairies, an imposing castle, and two pubescent protagonists on the road from innocence to maturity.
Fantastic makeup – especially Curry’s – and a genuine atmosphere of dreamy surrealism make Legend worth watching more than once.
