Lawyer Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a compulsive liar. When his deceits lead to him missing his son’s birthday party, the boy makes an exasperated wish over his birthday cake candles that his dad would find it impossible not to tell the truth.
The wish comes magically true – with hilarious consequences.
Carrey’s frenzied physical and vocal contortions provide lots of amusing comic moments, as well as a few riotous ones, and the role is not only tailor-made for his rubber-faced antics but also gives him an opportunity to show a more human side.
His bravura performance is reminiscent of Steve Martin’s body battle in All of Me (1984), as he hurls inadvertent insults and digs himself into an abyss in the middle of a big multi-million dollar divorce case where his client (Jennifer Tilly) is an oversexed adulteress who doesn’t deserve one red cent.
