Jane Chase (Elisabeth Shue) is an American student of primatology who travels to an isolated cliff-top mansion in Scotland to help English anthropologist Steven Philips (Terence Stamp), who is studying and writing books on ape behaviour.
Living with Philips are chimpanzees Imp and Voodoo and an ex-circus ape called Link, (actually an orangutan), who dresses as a butler and likes to smoke cigars.
Link turns nasty when he overhears that the Professor has plans to put him down.
Dr Phillips goes missing, leaving Jane at the mercy of an increasingly menacing Link whose behaviour becomes more unruly and violent.
Slow-moving, predictable and rather silly, the film has nice windswept Scottish locations and one good murder scene where a postman is pulled through a letterbox by the irate ape!
Jerry Goldsmith wrote the Gremlins-derived music score, which predictably also makes (dreadful) use of the Kinks favourite, Ape Man.
