This stop-motion animated Rankin Bass production stars the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller and revolves around a party organised by Baron von Frankenstein on the occasion of his retirement as the head of the World Organisation of Monsters.
A cavalcade of monsters are invited to the shindig on the Isle of Evil, including Dracula, the Werewolf, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, the Invisible Man and many others. Live music is provided by skeletons in Beatles wigs.
When the Baron names his long-lost nerdy human nephew Felix Flankin as his successor, all hell breaks loose.
With the exception of Baron von Frankenstein, every male voice in the film was provided by Allen Swift. Several recognisable characters are called by different names in the film in order to cut costs on royalties.
The stop-motion figures are fabulous, the spy-groovy soundtrack is superb and the film is extremely entertaining. And you can bet Tim Burton was watching this when it first came out!
