Formed in Battle, East Sussex, in 1995, Keane struggled to find momentum when their original guitarist, Dominic Scott, left in 2001, until they decided to drop the lead guitar entirely and use Tim Rice-Oxley’s piano as their lead instrument.
Combined with Tom Chaplin’s soaring vocals, this approach gave birth to their signature piano-rock style.
Their debut album, Hopes and Fears (2004), won the BRIT Award for Best British Album and became one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history. It featured the hit singles Somewhere Only We Know and Everybody’s Changing.
The darker, more electronic-influenced Under the Iron Sea (2006) debuted at #1 in the UK and #4 on the US Billboard 200.
Perfect Symmetry (2008) and Strangeland (2012) continued their chart-topping streak while incorporating more standard guitars and 80s synth-pop elements.
Following a compilation album in 2013, the group took a five-year hiatus to focus on their personal lives and solo projects. They reunited in 2019 to release their fifth studio album, Cause and Effect.
