Nicholas George Gildern was born in London on 21 December 1951. While studying at Technical College in King’s Lynn (Norfolk), his parents migrated to Canada and Nick followed after completing his exams.
He began his musical career as frontman for the glam rock band Sweeney Todd, which later briefly featured a very young Bryan Adams. Sweeney Todd had a #1 hit with Roxy Roller in 1976 and went on to win a Juno Award for Best Selling Single in 1977.
Nick and his songwriting partner Jimmy McCulloch decided to move to Los Angeles and signed an American record deal.
His second solo album spawned the hit single Hot Child in the City, which reached #1 in Canada and the US and made the Top 20 in Australia. It stalled outside the Top 40 in the UK but remained a favourite FM radio track for many years.
Gilder enjoyed only minimal success as a performer afterwards and none of his subsequent releases featured in the Top 40.
He has been successful, though, as a songwriter for other artists such as Bette Midler, Joe Cocker, Pat Benatar and Toni Basil and his songs have been used in movies including Youngblood (1986), The Wraith (1986), Scenes From the Goldmine (1987) and Barb Wire(1996), and in television shows including Sex and the City (1998 – 2004), That ’70s Show (1998 – 2006), Ed (2000 – 2004) and Nip/Tuck (2003 – 2010).
