1 9 4 6 – 1 9 6 7 (UK)
Debuting on 4 March 1946, this BBC Radio record request programme was broadcast six mornings a week until 1967 on the BBC Light Programme.
The show played a wide range of popular music – intended to appeal to housewives left at home during the day while their men were out at work – and had a different presenter every week. Among the more than 250 presenters were Bryan Michie, Roy Rich, Gilbert Harding, Eamonn Andrews, Godfrey Winn, Robert McDermott, Richard Murdoch, John Slater, Gary Miller, Kenneth Horne, Sam Costa, Edmundo Ros, George Elrick, Desmond Carrington and David Jacobs.
Housewives’ Choice became extremely popular and achieved a massive listening audience.
The programme ended when the Light Programme was replaced by BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 in 1967. Its short-lived successor, Family Choice, was broadcast on both Radios 1 and 2, but by September 1969, had also ended.
The distinctive theme music was the clarinet-based In Party Mood by Jack Strachey.
