Born on 23 July 1937, Robert W. Morgan was a legendary American radio personality who dominated the Southern California morning drive-time airwaves for over three decades.
Morgan led the team of “Boss Jocks” at KHJ-AM in LA and would kick off each broadcast with a cry of, “Good morning, Boss Angeles!”
He also coined the phrase “Arise and Morganize” to kick off his energetic morning shifts.
Aside from a brief move to WIND Radio in Chicago from 1970 to 1972, Morgan spent his career commanding the Los Angeles market across several premier stations, including KHJ, KMPC, KIQQ, and KMGG.
He won the Billboard award for ‘Air Personality of the Year’ in 1967, and two years later narrated and co-produced the first-ever rock & roll documentary, The History of Rock and Roll.
He also served as the announcer for the hit syndicated musical television series Solid Gold for seven seasons during the 1980s.
He finished his career at the oldies outlet KRTH-FM, where he hosted mornings from 1992.
In May 1997, Morgan announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, candidly attributing the illness to his 35-year, two-pack-a-day cigarette habit.
He stepped down from full-time radio to fight the disease, becoming a vocal advocate for lung cancer awareness.
Robert W Morgan died on 22 May 1998, aged 60.
