The British card game Top Trumps was first launched in 1978. Published by a company named Dubreq, there were initially eleven different themed packs selling at 50p each.
Each card contained a list of numerical data (for example, in a pack based on cars, each card showed a different model of car, and stats and data including its engine size, its weight, its length, and its top speed) and the aim of the game was to compare these values to try to “trump” and win an opponent’s card.
Dubreq was taken over by Waddingtons in 1982 and continued manufacturing packs until the early 1990s.
In 1992 the rights to the game were purchased by Winning Moves UK, who relaunched the game.
