1 9 6 1 – 1 9 6 6 (Australia)
30 minute episodes
This Australian daytime game show from TCN9 (originally from ATN7) aired every weekday and was hosted by American Tommy Hanlon (born Tommy Thomason) – although he firmly believed the contestants were the actual stars.
“I like people,” he said. “I worry about them; sometimes I feel happy about them, sometimes I feel sad. I think my liking for them gets through to them, and they like me”.
The Australian viewing public proved he was right by writing him 50,000 letters a week.
The unusual format of the show – based on the American game show of the same name – often involved surprise reunions with long-lost relatives (including Hanlon’s own mother, in one instance, flown in from the US to surprise the host on the air).
The show was revived in 1969 with Tim Evans as the host, and again in the 1980s co-hosted by Barry Crocker and Tony Porter.
Hanlon died from cancer in Melbourne, Australia, on 11 October 2003. He was 80.
