Kenny Everett introduced this programme of musical madness from Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band – an offshoot of the eclectic Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
The players, each with a distinct personality of their own, consistently swapped instruments and roles to give a fresh twist to every (old fashioned) tune they played. They also put on funny hats and pulled grotesque faces.
Robert “The Fuhrer” Kerr (saxophone, cornet, trombone and teapot) took to the stage with pianist David Glasson, James “Golden Boots” Chambers on alto sax, banjo-pluckers Vernon Dudley Bowhay-Nowell, John “Evil Gieves” Watson and Biff Harrison, Frank Tomes on sousaphone, and Sam Spoons, who dealt with the spoons (as the name suggests), percussion and vocals.
The audience was specially transported from Bob Kerr’s own club in a Putney pub.
