In 1930s Sweden, nine-year-old Fia (Julia Hede) and her piano-teacher mother live in a country villa with bad-tempered housekeeper Malin (Betty Tuvén).
One day, a boy called Hampus (Ulf Hasseltorp) comes to the village with his uncle, a poor shoemaker, and moves in across the road.
Both Fia and Hampus are mocked and ostracised by the local kids, and to escape their difficult realities, they invent alter-egos – Fia becomes ‘Fideli’, and Hampus becomes ‘Farornas konung’ (The King of Dangers).
They form an intense, private bond revolving around a small, perfectly smooth, beautiful white stone.
In their fantasy world, the white stone is the reward for challenging exploits.
To possess the stone, they must complete increasingly difficult and imaginative dares set by the other – ranging from painting a face on the local church clock to hiding an egg under the mattress of the strict district chief.
Filmed on location in the scenic Kalmar region (Bergkvara), the show expertly captured a nostalgic, late-summer rural Sweden.
Originally titled Den vita stenen and adapted from the award-winning 1964 novel of the same name by prominent children’s author Gunnel Linde, the series aired in the UK (with English subtitles) as The White Stone in 1977.
