This Canadian comedy series featured sketches, original music videos and bizarre characters, all performed by ‘The Frantics’, a comedy troupe comprising Paul Chato, Rick Green, Dan Redican and Peter Wildman, who first made their name with a long-running show on radio.
Skits included “pit stop surgery”, glove theatre, the combination Olympics, Mr Interesting, The Oilers vs The Turtles, Vincent and Toulouse, and Mr Canoehead.
At $300,000 per episode, the fast-paced show proved too costly for CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and was cancelled after a single series.
However, it gained popularity in reruns, creating rabidly loyal fans like Monty Python.
Six episodes made it to the Showtime Pay TV network in the US, and the series was aired on Channel 4 in Britain in 1988 and 1989.
