Daytime soap-opera maven Gloria Monty produced this five-part prime-time serial, which aired during July and August 1983.
As in other prime-time soaps, the principal characters were rich and miserable, but at least the setting was different: New York City and the fashionable nearby Hamptons resort area on Long Island.
Two old families – the Chadways and the Duncan Mortimers – were linked both by romance and co-ownership of the chic Duncan-Chadway department store chain.
Corporate intrigue and sexual scandal swirled through the short summer run, and by the fifth and final episode ‘good guy’ Peter Chadway stood accused of murdering Penny Drake during his battle to retain control of Duncan-Chadway; conniving Jay Mortimer (who was trying to take the company away from him) was exposed as having an incestuous relationship with his stepdaughter Tracy; Jay’s drunken wife Adrienne was enraged; and suave mogul Nick Atwater was making a strong play for Peter’s loyal wife, Lee.
