25 minute episodes
Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves were the last football pundits to appear on the long-running World Of Sport series. When that show was eventually cancelled in 1985 after 20 years on air, their slot survived as a separate ITV programme entitled Saint and Greavsie.
Debuting on 5 October 1985, the former England (Greaves) and Scotland (St John) international players presented a 25-minute look at football and other sports, including a preview of the weekend fixtures (with their “fearless forecasts”), a light-hearted discussion of sporting news, and interviews with top sports people as their guests in the studio.
The show was finally shown the red card in Summer 1992 after the BBC stitched up a deal with Sky Sport and the new Premier League, and ITV lost the £304 million battle to screen matches to BSkyB.
With ITV no longer showing the top matches, the duo would have had little to talk about.
The final programmes were broadcast from Sweden during Euro 92, with the pair making jokes at Sky’s expense.
Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves both passed away in 2021, aged 82 and 81, respectively.
