Not to be confused with the 1966 – 1967 family western TV series, this Monroes was a primetime soap opera about a powerful and ambitious Maryland family whose multimillionaire patriarch, John Monroe (William Devane), is about to run for governor until a scandal puts an end to his dream.
John is married to Kathryn (Susan Sullivan) and is the father of five children: philandering congressman Billy (David Andrews) – who is married to Anne (Lynn Clark); tough lawyer Greer (Cecil Hoffman), who is having a secret affair with a high-ranking Washington official (perhaps the President); astronaut James (Steve Eckholdt), who is the family’s golden child; rebellious photographer Ruby (Tracy Griffith); and Gabriel (Tristan Tait), the “baby” of the family who is into motorcycles, drugs and disgracing the family.
Michael Bradley (Darryl Theirse) is the family attorney who is treated like one of the family.
The Monroes are a family who do not play by the rules, and stories explore sex scandals, family betrayals, bribery and other sources of conflict within the family.
