This Nickelodeon series introduced amateur sleuth Shelby Woo (Irene Ng), a fast-talking 16-year-old Chinese-American girl from Cocoa Beach, Florida, who excels in school (she is a straight-A student).
Shelby works as a police station clerk after school and lives with her innkeeper grandfather Mike “Grandpa” Woo (Pat Morita), a retired detective with the San Francisco PD.
She is supposed to file papers and get coffee but is fascinated by crime and crime-solving and has developed a keen sense of deduction which she uses to help the Cocoa Beach PD – especially Detective Whit Hineline (Steve Purnick) – to solve baffling crimes.
Shelby’s friends Noah (Adam Busch) and Cindy (Preslaysa Edwards) help her solve crimes (and provide some comic relief). The trio hang out at CJ’s burger joint.
As Shelby led the investigation on her computer by replaying clues, evidence, and suspect profiles, viewers could also draw conclusions and devise solutions.
The final season was taped in Montreal, Canada, and the setting was changed from Cocoa Beach to Boston, Massachusetts, where Shelby now assisted Detective Sharon Delancey (Ellen David).
Shelby’s new buddies in Boston were Vince (Noah Klar) and Angie (Eleanor Noble).
