    18 December 2019

Born in 1938 and raised in Stepney, East London, Kenny Lynch was one of thirteen children. He began singing with his sister, Gladys, who was a jazz singer working under the name of Maxine Daniels.

He was one of the few black British pop singers to find fame in the early 1960s, signing to EMI’s HMV label where his first single, a cover of Harold Dorman’s American top thirty hit, Mountain Of Love made the UK Top 40. Five further singles failed to make an impact before he made the charts again in 1962 with Puff (Up In Smoke).

He was also the first artist to cover a Beatles song when he released a version of Misery in 1963. A decade later, he was one of the celebrities to appear with Paul and Linda McCartney on the sleeve of the Wings album Band on the Run.

Kenny was best known for his role in the 1970 movie Carry On Loving and his hit top 10 songs Up On The Roof and You Can Never Stop Me Loving You. He also appeared in several TV shows including Curry and Chips (1969) and Get This (1976).

He received an OBE for his stellar career in entertainment.
