This American music festival was held between 12 – 14 August 1994 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival of 1969. The event was held at the 840-acre Winston Farm, New York – 70 miles northeast of the original 1969 festival site near Bethel.
While only 164,000 tickets were sold, the crowd at Woodstock ’94 was much larger as more than 150,000 people without tickets knocked down the perimeter fences and stormed the grounds, turning the festival into a free show.
Rainy weather turned much of the field into mud, resulting in the event becoming known as “Mudstock ’94”.
Three deaths were confirmed at the event, with 5,000 people treated at medical tents and 800 taken to hospitals.
Highlights from the concert were released as a double album set on CD and cassette. A film about the event, directed by Bruce Gowers, was released direct-to-video on VHS and Laserdisc.
The line-up included Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, Santana, Country Joe McDonald, Traffic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Aerosmith, The Cranberries, Violent Femmes, Nine Inch Nails, Green Day (who abandoned playing to have a mud fight with the audience), Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge.
