Young Melbourne journalist Will Gardiner (Scottish actor Mark McManus, later to find fame as DCI Jim Taggart) has interconnected crises on his hands: a clash with his editor; a marital crisis as his mistress, Jackie (Jeanie Drynan) prepares to leave for England; and a dying father (Michael Duffield).
It is the latter that turns his mind to mortality and the thought that he has 20000 weeks left to go (the interval between the age of 30 and 70).
Other key characters include Will’s wife, Sarah (Eileen Chapman) and his friend, Noel (David Turnbull) – a self-styled bigshot expatriate who has returned to Melbourne from success in London.
Tim Burstall wrote and directed the brave but disappointing film which was savaged by critics on its release.
