Although technically not an Ed Wood film (he helped write it), this Allied Artist production has all the hallmarks of an Ed Wood film.
While big game hunter Dan Fuller (Lance Fuller) and his new wife Laura (Charlotte Austin) are on honeymoon at Dan’s mountain home, Laura discovers he has a pet gorilla called Spanky, which he keeps caged in the basement.
Laura finds she has an almost animal attraction for the gorilla, and vice versa. Later that night, Spanky (Ray “Crash” Corrigan in an ape suit) sneaks into the bridal chamber and pulls off Laura’s nightgown. Dan shoots and kills the gorilla.
Psychiatrist Dr Carl Reiner (William Justine) subsequently conducts hypnotic regression therapy on Laura and discovers she had been a gorilla herself in a past life (!)
Despite Reiner’s advice, Dan takes Laura to Africa on a safari for new animals. Cue 30 minutes or so of stock wildlife footage of rhinos, giraffes, leopards, pumas and tigers (yes, we know there are no tigers in Africa).
Finally, in the film’s final moments, a gorilla sweeps a sexually hungry-looking Laura off her feet and carries her off to a cave where she becomes “queen of the gorillas” with him and two of his simian buddies. The end.
