This abortive attempt at changing the lightweight movie image of Elvis Presley is a melodramatic and rather absurd Western featuring Elvis – tough and unshaven but hopelessly inexpressive – as a reformed outlaw who becomes the deputy in a small southwestern border town.
Jess Wade (Presley) battles a gang of outlaws who have stolen – and plan to sell – Mexico’s famed gold and silver Victory Gun, the weapon that fired the last shot against Maximilian and freed the country.
Elvis left his guitar at home for this one. Apart from the theme song, not one pearly note escapes from his throat for the rest of the film.
The original working title for Charro! was Come Hell, Come Sundown.
