Copper Canyon tells the story of a group of Civil War veterans from the South who move west to take up mining claims in a copper town. But a Denver man, Henderson (Ian Wolfe), and his associates try to force them out of business.
Also making things hot for them is rebel-hating Deputy Lane Travis (Macdonald Carey) and his henchmen.
In desperation, the Southerners seek the only man they feel can outwit their enemies – the South’s fabulous fighter, Colonel Desmond.
Desmond is known to have escaped from a Union Army jail, and the Federal authorities are searching for him and the $20,000 he is reputed to have stolen.
The Southerners think they have a better chance of tracing him, and a deputation of miners is sent to seek him out – but by mistake, they think vaudeville trick-shot artist Johnny Carter (Ray Milland) is the colonel.
Carter does his best to stay out of their battles but is still drawn into the conflict and becomes their leader while romancing saloon girl villainess Lisa Roselle (Hedy Lamarr).
