Tulsa MacLean (Elvis Presley) is an American soldier stationed in peacetime West Germany who sings with Cookie (Robert Ivers) and Rick (James Douglas) in a musical trio called The Three Blazes. The three also have plans to open a nightclub when they return home.
To raise money for the venture, Tulsa makes a $300 bet that he can spend the night with Lili (Juliet Prowse), a frosty Frankfurt cabaret dancer who regards the Americans as something to be avoided. Then, just as he realises that his feelings for Lili are changing, she finds out about the bet.
Meanwhile, Rick and Cookie date Marla (Sigrid Maier), a shy fraulein, and Tina (Leticia Roman), an Italian waitress, respectively.
Later, Tulsa acts as babysitter to the newborn son of Rick and Marla, but the infant presents problems. Desperate, Tulsa telephones Lili for help, and she tells him to bring the baby to her apartment, and he stays the night.
Tulsa’s pals are jubilant because they think he has won the bet. Lili is upset on learning about the wager, and Tulsa’s C.O orders his transfer to another base.
Misunderstanding is eventually swept away, and true love triumphs just as The Three Blazes make a splash at an army concert.
Prowse adds a lot of class, and Elvis sings a bunch of songs, including the title track and Wooden Heart.
In his first film after completing his real-life military service, Elvis was dating both Juliette Prowse and Leticia Roman. The Prowse romance was apparently pretty serious for a while.
The US Army supported the production of the film, providing tanks and crews from the Third Armoured Division for on-location filming. Exterior shots were filmed in Hesse: Friedberg, Winterstein, the FTAF Training Area, Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Idstein, Rüdesheim am Rhein, and Eltville.
The rest of the movie was filmed at the Paramount Pictures studio lot.
