In this sequel to the hit 1959 film Gidget, Frances “Gidget” Lawrence (with Sandra Dee replaced this time by newcomer Deborah Walley) heads off with her parents (Carl Reiner and Jeff Donnell) for a family vacation in Hawaii.
During the flight over, they meet Abby Stewart (Vicki Trickett) and her parents, Monty (Eddie Foy Jr) and Mitzi ( Peggy Cass) who are on vacation from New York, and ladies man Eddie Horner (Michael Callan), a popular TV dancer who is on his way to a club date in Hawaii.
Abby finds herself the centre of attention on the first evening until Gidget – who has been pining for her boyfriend in California, Jeff “Moondoggie” Matthews (James Darren) – decides to join the party. From then on, Abby plays second fiddle to Gidget, who, without even trying, monopolies the attention of Eddie and the rest of the young bloods.
Knowing Gidget is longing for Jeff, her father sends for him and he arrives to suppose her just in time to witness Gidget being kissed by Eddie.
The couple argue and, to make Gidget jealous, Jeff takes up with Abby, while Gidget pretends to enjoy Eddie’s over-amorous attentions.
When Abby thinks Gidget is going to take Jeff away from her, she starts a vicious rumour about her rival.
Confronted by her parents, Gidget becomes angry that they would believe such a lie and walks out of the hotel.
When Jeff finds out about it, he consoles Gidget and the two make up and return to find Gidget’s parents (who have meanwhile had an argument with Abby’s parents) and everyone is reconciled when they realise Abby’s story about Gidget was a lie.
The movie climaxes in a series of wrong-couple-wrong-room incidents and Abby getting her comeuppance from Gidget in the surf at Waikiki.
