Meatballs (1979)

This amiable Canadian-produced comedy featured Bill Murray as Tripper Harrison, a  counsellor-in-training at second-rate Camp North Star whipping a pack of stereotypes into shape.

Most of the story concerns Tripper’s sensitive friendship with a lonely young misfit, Rudy (Chris Makepeace), Tripper’s courtship with fellow counsellor-in-training, Roxanne (Kate Lynch), and Camp North Star’s various run-ins with the stuck-up folks at neighbouring Camp Mohawk.

This early collaboration for Murray and Ghost Busters director Ivan Reitman is solely dependent on its star for laughs, and Murray dominates every single frame, which is very definitely a good thing.

The movie appealed most to junior high school students – or adults who never escaped that mentality.

A sequel in name only followed in 1984.
