    Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)

Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is rejected by her fiancé after she is hit by a meteorite on her wedding day and grows to be 50 feet tall in this lovely animated homage to 1950s sci-fi films from DreamWorks.

Captured by the military, Susan – now renamed Ginormica – is locked away in a top-secret government containment facility with a ragtag group of other “misfit monsters” captured over the decades.

Heavily inspired by vintage cinema archetypes, the group includes B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen), a brainless, indestructible, and hilarious blue gelatinous mass created by crossing a chemically altered dessert topping with a tomato (in a nod to The Blob); Dr Cockroach Ph.D. (voiced by Hugh Laurie), a mad scientist who accidentally turned himself into a humanoid roach during a failed experiment (inspired by The Fly); the Missing Link (voiced by Will Arnett), a 20,000-year-old fish-man thawed out from deep ice by scientists based on Creature from the Black Lagoon); and Insectosaurus, a 350-foot-tall grub mutated by nuclear radiation who later cocoons into a massive butterfly-like creature (a tribute to Godzilla and Mothra).

When a power-hungry four-eyed squid-like extraterrestrial overlord named Gallaxhar (voiced by Rainn Wilson) attacks Earth, the military reluctantly deploys the monsters to save the planet.

The movie was a commercial hit (taking $381.5 million worldwide against a $175 million production budget) and spawned a Monsters vs. Aliens franchise, spinning off short films like Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space, a video game, and an animated Nickelodeon TV series in 2013.
