The original Beach Party (1963) was a big teen success, so the producers came up with this lacklustre sequel.
When a new gym – managed by Jack Fanny (Don Rickles) – opens next to the beach, conflicts soon arise between the beach gang and the muscle men in this musical starring Frankie Avalon as Frankie and Annette Funicello as Dee Dee.
Meanwhile, Julie, a wealthy Italian contessa (Luciana Paluzzi) – still in widow’s weeds but on the prowl, and managed by S.Z. Matts (Buddy Hackett) – wants muscle-man Flex Martian (Rock Stevens) for her own – until she meets Frankie.
Frankie’s girl Dee Dee gets rightfully jealous and plans to avenge the Frankie-stealing contessa.
Avalon warbles horribly, Annette dances as if she has a live octopus attached to her derrière, everyone hops around in shorts shaking their heads wildly, and the major plotline of clashing teenage rivals makes West Side Story look like Assault on Precinct 13.
Frankie and Dee Dee returned later in the year (along with most of the cast) in Bikini Beach.
