The nuns of a convent show a penchant for dirty tricks and thoroughly bad behaviour when a contest for the top job at their Philadelphia convent hots up following the death of the abbess, in this satirical comedy starring Glenda Jackson and Melina Mercouri.
As the nuns smoke, drink, swear and cheat their way to the ballot, it gradually becomes apparent that the events are mimicking those of the Watergate scandal. Few people today though will appreciate the political references.
This is an appropriate title for a mildly sacrilegious comedy, based on the novel The Abbess of Crewe by Muriel Spark.
